Power Skating Accelerated

Power Skating Accelerated

Competitive Skating Skills are enhanced by Coach Glenn’s unique slant on the traditional forms of Power Skating. Utilizing what he calls “Power Skating Accelerated” the focus is on developing a powerful skating technique emphasizing Speed, Agility, Balance, Quickness and Acceleration, these being the foundation for great game playing and developing exceptional hockey skills.

To teach these skills Coach Glenn utilizes a series of unique drills chosen from such highly regarded trainers as Laura Stramm, Victor Baryshevtsev, Tom Watt and others as well as his own, stressing the need for players to utilize these techniques in Game Play situations. Alex Ovechkin explains in his analysis of the relationship of Power Skating Accelerated and its role in his success as a player. “Getting to the puck first and having the speed, skill and smarts to do the proper thing with it” is his take on the priorities of Game Playing Successfully.

All the elements of great power skating including:

  1. arm control
  2.  knee bend
  3. leg extension and posture
  4. 180 degree edge control,
  5. accelerated forward and backward transition
  6. pivoting
  7. crossovers,
  8. instant stops with explosive re-starts,
  9.  head and hip positioning

among others will be addressed, demonstrated, taught and corrected to achieve maximum speed and agility.

Coach Glenn’s innovative drills include the use of obstacles, pylons, counterforce, misdirection and strength training techniques. Skating speed is developed through ice drills that emphasize interval sprints especially those that mimic the types of movements, of players in games. It will be quickly seen and felt how Power Skating Accelerated surpasses the more utilitarian teaching of traditional Power Skating Techniques.

Stick Skills Magnified

Stick Skills Magnified

As mentioned in our Power Skating Accelerated section, improvement in shooting and stickhandling skills are a natural by-product of improved skating. Taking this one step further, Stick Skills Magnified will be taught in conjunction with Game Play Successfully not only to improve the techniques but how, when and where to use each of these skills during a hockey game.

Stick Skills Magnified works to develop the:

  1. forehand and backhand shot
  2. wrist shot
  3. snap shot
  4. slap shot
  5. one timer
  6. wraparound

while focussing on proper body mechanics, arm, wrist and hand positioning, power, control and quick decision making. Where to aim, (don’t hit the goalie and don’t miss the net), when to shoot high or low, knowing the scoring areas, and how and when to get there are taught in these everyday sessions. We teach scoring not only shooting. That’s what Stick Skills Magnified is all about.

Stick Skills Magnified with Coaches Glenn and Milan teach the very difficult art of proper stickhandling at full speed, while under pressure from opposing defensemen or forechecking forwards

  1. toe drag
  2. narrow and wide dekes
  3. push and pull feinting
  4. puck control
  5. puck protection
  6. speed and transition
  7. agility
  8. deception.

Most importantly these sessions are structured to teach each player, when to stickhandle, when to shoot and when to pass, to decide which choice will ultimately benefit the team. Smart Hockey Training and learning the important role passing plays in the overall outcome of a game is covered in our “Passing and Receiving” sessions.

The correct :

  1. backhand/forehand
  2. saucer
  3. firm vs. feather
  4. accuracy
  5. timing
  6. give and go
  7. cycling techniques

are all practiced as part of the “Passing” element.

  1. Puck receiving skills
  2. stick positioning
  3. body and leg positioning
  4. stick tension(soft hands)
  5. readiness
  6. puck control

are taught in conjunction with rapid defence/offense transitional hockey. The puck moves much faster than the legs and the team that passes well will usually end up with more Game Playing Success.
